The Gospel of Matthew is divided into five discourses.The first discourse is about the Sermon on the Mount (Mt 5:1 -:29). The Second discourse is about the Instructions for Mission (Mt 9: 36- 11:1). The Third discourse is about the images of the Kingdom. (Mt 13: 1-53).

Today’s gospel is the last part of the Missionary discourse (Mt 9: 36-11, 1). Two themes are put together in the same passage. The cost of discipleship and the reward that comes with fidelity to Christ and his Gospel. The first theme puts emphasis on the cost of being a disciple of Christ.
